Porter's Lodge, the brick gateway into the College of Charleston campus

Is the College of Charleston Right for Your Student?

September 29, 2026

Hi! I'm Tamara Baptiste, Founder and Principal Counselor at The College Application Specialist®, and I toured the College of Charleston on July 27, 2026. It fits the student who wants a liberal arts college experience in one of America's most historic cities, with the programs and reach of a public university. So let's explore.

College of Charleston Fast Facts

  • Founded: 1770, the 13th oldest educational institution in the United States
  • Undergraduates: 10,596, 49.2% from out of state
  • Fall 2027 deadlines: Early Decision I and Early Action, November 2; Early Decision II and Regular Decision, January 15

Historic Preservation, With Charleston as the Classroom

CofC's magazine calls Historic Preservation and Community Planning "the largest undergraduate program of its kind in the U.S. and one of the oldest," and "the only one combining historic preservation with community planning and urban design."

The cool thing is that "Historic Charleston serves as a living laboratory." Students work in an architectural design studio, research historic properties in the archives and create preservation plans. There are "more than 200 internship opportunities locally, nationally and internationally," from the City of Charleston's planning department to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Students can even study traditional crafts with the King's Foundation at Dumfries House in Scotland.

And the coolest thing: in 2024, ten of the eighteen staff at the Preservation Society of Charleston were CofC alumni. This means that your student learns preservation inside a historic city, with a clear path into the organizations that protect it.

A Business School in Rare Company

The School of Business is AACSB-accredited in business and in accounting. Only 6% of business schools worldwide earn AACSB accreditation.

Commercial Real Estate Finance is "the first of its kind offered in South Carolina." Investment Program students manage public and private portfolios, and alumni work at Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan.

Pre-Health, With MUSC Next Door

Health Professions advising covers 13 tracks, starting in the first semester. The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) anchors the College's accelerated degree pathways:

  • Biology + PharmD: "guarantees up to five incoming first-year students a place in the MUSC College of Pharmacy."
  • 3+2 programs: leading to an MPH or an MHA.

MUSC researchers also recruit undergraduates at the annual Research Matchmaking Session.

Programs Few Other Schools Can Claim

CofC is "the only university in the state and one of the few in the country that offers a major in archaeology." Arts Management is "the only program in South Carolina offering a major and minor." The College runs its own marine lab at Fort Johnson, and in Open Doors 2025 it ranked #1 in short-term study abroad participation among master's-level institutions.

A Campus in One of America's Most Historic Cities

Three of the College's founders signed the Declaration of Independence. Charleston saw "the first decisive patriot victory over the British Royal Navy" in 1776, and the Civil War began at Fort Sumter in 1861.

That history includes slavery. The International African American Museum stands on Gadsden's Wharf, where tens of thousands of enslaved Africans arrived. This is Gullah Geechee country, and the College's Avery Research Center stands on the site of the Avery Normal Institute (1865 to 1954).

The City, Day to Day

Living in Charleston can be fascinating or challenging. The history and the internships are right there. So are summer heat, more frequent flooding and no resident parking until 60 credit hours. Worth asking: what does your student want from the city around their campus?

Where Your Student Lives and Eats

We spent a good part of the tour inside Liberty Hall, which sits right above Liberty St. Food Hall, with Jack-and-Jill suites and a common kitchen. Every hall has free laundry, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour information and security desk. Returning students can live in one of 21 historic houses, each with a full kitchen.

The cool thing is that your student picks their own residence hall and room. CofC does not match roommates, so students form a roommate group by May 15 or pick into a room.

A housing tip: the housing application opens February 1, and June room selection follows the date each student completed it. CofC guarantees first-years housing when they pay the enrollment deposit and $50 housing fee and complete the application by May 1. So complete it as soon as your student commits.

Downstairs, Liberty St. Food Hall is all-you-care-to-eat, with made-to-order pizza and pasta plus salad, grill and deli stations. Food allergies are taken seriously: the hall has dedicated allergy solutions, and the on-campus registered dietitian can prescribe a therapeutic diet for a student with a medical diagnosis. First-year meal plans include unlimited meal taps, plus Dining Dollars that roll over until graduation. City Bistro is the second all-you-care-to-eat hall, and Marty's Place serves kosher food with vegan and vegetarian menus.

The Vibe

On their first day, new students walk into Cistern Yard through Porter's Lodge, under its Greek inscription, "Know Thyself," and sign the book. At graduation, they recess back out through the same gate, and spring graduates wear white dresses or white dinner jackets, not caps and gowns.

The Cistern dates to 1857, and its job was fighting fires. Students say walking across it before graduation adds a semester, so your student may want to walk around. Cistern Yard also hosts Casino Night and Spoleto Festival USA performances, and Clyde the Cougar cheers on 19 Division I teams.

The brick sidewalks are laid in a red herringbone pattern, the only ones like them in Charleston, and the campus has appeared in The Patriot, Cold Mountain, The Notebook and Dear John. Summer visits skip the information session to get families in and out before the heat, so meet with an admissions counselor before or after the tour. Counselors are assigned by region across the country, so find yours.

What It Costs

The 2026-27 total cost of attendance is $35,270 in-state and $63,856 out-of-state. CofC automatically considers every out-of-state first-year for $2,000 to $12,000 a year in merit, with no separate application. Eligible South Carolina residents receive the SC LIFE Scholarship, $5,000 a year.

Tamara's Take

The College of Charleston is a strong choice for the student who wants a liberal arts college experience in one of America's most historic cities, with the programs and reach of a public university. From the only archaeology major in the state, the only arts management major in South Carolina, the country's largest undergraduate historic preservation and community planning program and its own marine lab, to a business school with the AACSB accreditation that only 6% of business schools in the WORLD earn, pre-health advising from day one, accelerated degree pathways with MUSC, #1 in short-term study abroad among master's-level schools, AND a campus that has been teaching since 1770, the College of Charleston has a LOT to offer. And that is before you consider automatic merit review for out-of-state students, and all that Charleston itself has to offer.
