UNC Greensboro Brings the World to Your Student, and Professors Still Know Their Name

September 28, 2026•6 min read

I spent a Saturday at UNC Greensboro, in Greensboro, North Carolina, the third-largest city in the state. UNC Greensboro is affordable, diverse, and big enough to bring the world to your student, and small enough that professors still know your student's name.

Fast facts on UNC Greensboro

  • Location: Greensboro, North Carolina. Public, UNC System

  • Enrollment: 19,078 students

  • Average class size: 27

  • First-generation students: 52 percent of undergraduates

  • 2026-27 cost of attendance: $24,544 in state, $42,726 out of state

What your student would study

A bachelor's and a master's in as little as five years

The Accelerated Master's lets up to 12 graduate credits count toward both degrees. More than twenty programs take part, each with its own requirements, so ask whether your student's intended major is one.

IDEAS, a program found almost nowhere else

IDEAS stands for Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy Services, a Bachelor of Science with three concentrations. Advocacy and Services for the Deaf is the only public four-year program of its kind in the nation. Interpreter Preparation is the only public four-year program of its kind in North Carolina, and the K-12 Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher licensure concentration is the only one in the state. This means that your student can train for this work at a level of specialization most universities do not offer at all.

More than 700 undergraduates also do funded research every year.

Where your student would live

The Residential Colleges are the piece I would look at first. Each one pairs a subject with a building. Ashby is arts, design and media. Strong is environmental and social sustainability. North Spencer is community health, medicine and wellness, and South Spencer is law and justice. Our student guide told us the school does it this way so students can find their people.

Eighty percent of first-year students live on campus. The cool thing is that dining plans roll over from fall to spring, where many schools let unused swipes expire at the end of a semester.

There's lot of things to do on campus.

Study abroad that keeps the aid package

Study abroad at UNC Greensboro runs on exchange. Your student keeps paying UNC Greensboro tuition, and the whole financial aid package travels along. Ninety percent of semester and year students go this way, across more than 100 agreements in more than 40 countries. UNC Greensboro students have won more than 171 Gilman Scholarships, the most of any school in the state. And don't forget the honors college travel grant, worth up to $1,100.

What the outcomes show

The Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics holds AACSB accreditation in both business and accounting. Only 6 percent of business schools in the WORLD hold AACSB accreditation. Seventy-four percent of its graduates were working within six months, and 76 percent of those working had the job before graduation, at an average starting salary of $57,900.

Nursing graduates passed the NCLEX at 90.23 percent, against a national average of 87.6 percent. These are school-level figures. UNC Greensboro does not publish a university-wide starting salary.

Student life on the UNC Greensboro campus

Students leave apples for Minerva for good luck on exams.

Student life

UNC Greensboro has 250 student organizations and 17 Division I teams, and no football team, so the students built Storm the Streets instead. Before the basketball home opener they paint their faces and walk to the coliseum together.

What I kept noticing was how visible the support is. The Spartan Open Pantry hands out groceries and hot meals in the open, and the campus police have a comfort dog named Odin that students can request.

And the coolest thing is that students leave apples for Minerva during exams. Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, was the university's symbol when it opened as a college for women in 1892. The higher the apple lands, the better the exam goes, at least that is the hope. One year a student managed to get one in her hand. No word on how that student did.

Nursing, admitted directly

One of the most competitive programs at UNC Greensboro is nursing, which is direct admit. Applicants normally have at least a 3.5 high school GPA and rank in the top half of their class, and they apply by the November 1 Early Action deadline. UNC Greensboro was the first school in the UNC System to admit nursing students this way.

Cost of attendance and merit aid

The 2026-27 cost of attendance is $24,544 in state and $42,726 out of state, covering tuition, housing, food, books, travel and personal spending. UNC Greensboro uses the FAFSA only, with a March 1 priority date.

Lloyd International Honors College offers separate named scholarships worth $5,000 to $10,000 a year, and a student wins one or none. Against the out-of-state cost of attendance, one award covers 12 to 23 percent, so the family still plans for roughly $33,000 to $38,000 a year before loans, grants or other scholarships. This means that your student treats honors money as a real discount, not as the thing that closes the gap.

Two of the largest named awards, Katharine Smith Reynolds and the Lamy awards, are North Carolina awards by design. For awards UNC Greensboro does not label by residency, check with the admissions office.

Dates to know

  • Early Action, and nursing: November 1, 2026

  • Merit scholarship deadline: December 1, for Early Action and Regular Decision applicants. Confirm it with admissions

  • Regular Decision: March 1, 2027

  • Fall open houses: September 26 and November 14, 2026

Every open house and deadline we track is on our fall 2026 visit dates and deadlines page.

Tamara's Take

UNC Greensboro is a solid choice for the student who wants a large university feel with medium-sized university qualities. From a robust honors college, real undergraduate research opportunities, a top-tier business school, a direct-admit nursing program, the only Deaf K-12 education program in the state, and options that make it unique in the country, AND the ability to pursue a bachelor's and master's degree simultaneously, UNCG has a LOT to offer. And that's before you consider the price tag, merit award options, and all that the city itself has to offer.
