Before working with Ms. Tamara, I applied to colleges based on rankings and names. I didn't really understand how to tell my own story. Every essay I wrote were MY words, MY story, MY feelings. I wasn't trying to sound like someone else or write what I thought schools wanted to hear. That confidence carried into my interviews, my applications, and eventually into my graduate work as well.

Before starting the process, I felt overwhelmed and unprepared. What helped me most was understanding what schools are actually looking for, which schools to submit materials to, and what to submit. I discovered what I wanted out of my college experience, and my college list reflected who I was and what mattered to me. I felt more in control and much less stressed — and I was really proud of my essay because it told my story.

My son applied to a large number of schools because so many were incredibly competitive. My time became consumed with reviewing essays, and I knew there were major gaps in our understanding of the process. Learning about the FAFSA, Net Price Calculators, and the CSS Profile was eye-opening. Had we known this information earlier, our son's college list might have been very different. This guidance not only helped us this year, but also gave us a plan for our younger children. I would tell other parents to meet with her well before they think they need to — it still won't be early enough.
